How To Generate YouTube Chapter Markers

This tutorial will show you how to generate YouTube Chapter Markers to cut your video into sections with titles and thumbnail previews (video tutorial below article if you want to watch instead of reading the text).

YouTube Chapter Markers are generated automatically from timestamps in the description box of YouTube Videos as long as you format them correctly.

3 Requirements to Generate Timestamps:

  1. Timestamp #1 must be at 00:00 (ex. 00:00 Intro)
  2. You must have at least 3 Timestamps in Ascending Order
  3. Each section must be at least 10 Seconds Long (duration between timestamps)

How To Read Timestamps

  • 00:00 (Minutes: Seconds)
  • 01:30:22 (1 Hour: 30 Minutes: 22 Seconds)

How to Add Timestamps?

  • Watch your video and note timestamps to call out and add a title
  • Upload a video to YouTube, Add Title and go to the Description box
  • Enter Timestamp (minutes: seconds) followed by one space and then the title…Example: 00:00 Intro

How To Generate YouTube Chapter Markers:

YouTube automatically generates the markers if you add timestamps and meet the 3 requirements (start at 00:00, 3 timestamps min, 10 seconds minimum)

  1. Upload a Video To YouTube
  2. Add Timestamps (minutes: seconds) in Description Box followed by one space and title.
  3. Timestamp #1 must be at 00:00 (ex. 00:00 Intro)
  4. Include at least 3 timestamps in ascending order (00:00, 00:15, 00:45)
  5. The duration between each timestamp must be at least 10 seconds apart (if timestamp #1 is 00:00, then timestamp #2 must be at least 00:10)
  6. Publish video and confirm chapter markers were generated.
-If working, you will see sections under scrubber and previews upon hover
-If not working, check to make sure timestamp #1 is at 00:00 and that you have at least 10 seconds between each timestamp.
  7. That’s it. YouTube Chapter Markers are 😎👍💪.
