Tutorial: The new way of using Free Transform in Photoshop CC 2019. For those who have been using Photoshop for some time, this change will take some getting used to. Note: There is a 2-minute video tutorial at the bottom of this article.

Spoiler: The new way to free transform (cmd + t) is to simply drag the bounding box. No modifier keys required. Drag from any side and it will scale proportionally. It is much easier in Photoshop CC 2019, but it is different.

Bonus for Old Dogs (Revert Back)

How to turn off the new proportional scaling and revert to legacy method.

Note: I was informed there were issues with Mac OS Mojave. I can not confirm this because I am going to accept the new change and deal with it! 💪

To revert to the legacy transform behavior, do the following:

  1. Use Notepad (Windows) or a text editor on Mac OS to create a plain text file (.txt).
  2. Type the text below in the text file:
    TransformProportionalScale 0
  3. Save the file as “PSUserConfig.txt” to your Photoshop settings folder:
  • Windows: [Installation Drive]:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 Settings\
  • macOS: //Users/[User Name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 Settings/
