I’ve been called RainMan. I like repetition and routines. I like consistency and reliability. I am never late to anything. I show up. Always. I also make sure I practice the things I want to be better at everyday. Rain or shine. No exceptions. I am far from perfect, but self-disciplined.
Morning routines have been a hot topic online for some time now. Meditation, bullet-proof coffee, daily writing/journaling, writing your 6 goals…The hopefuls try everything looking for the magic bullet, the naysayers say it’s a gimmick to sell more marketing courses and I say routines are a good thing. Repetition is practice and practice makes perfect, or at least above average.
Whatever is important to you or that you want to be better at, you have to do it everyday until it comes a routine. You can make all the excuses you want or think you have the skills you need, but unless you do something everyday like a habit, or well, a routine, you will not be the best at what you do. I am often teased for my routines and rigid diligence and maybe I’m a slow learner or not as talented as others, but my routines are making me better in business and life and it’s all about consistency and practice.
Be relentless and hold yourself accountable to your routines if you want to really be better or an authority in your specialty or just be healthier or develop a new skill. Routines and repetition and practice work if you know the reason why you are doing them. Bad routines work the same way in reverse, fyi. Notice what things you do everyday that are working against you and do whatever you can to discard those. Routines take a long time to stick and even longer to undo those that are affecting you negatively.
Routines equal showing up everyday. Not easy, but worth it. Practice what you preach or what matters to you.
